Theory of Architecture Class Reflection

The Theory of Architecture class, section 4146-001, was one where I learned much more about concepts and principles that have been around since long before modern times. It is evident that since the practice is formalized and construction booms, the theory is born to provide an explanation of the entire background involved in creating a work of architecture in its specific context. The class covered aspects of the theory of technicalities and functions accompanied by aesthetic, historical, artistic, philosophical and cultural considerations.

Architecture has historically been a mirror of society and its evolution. Buildings and cities reflect the social structures, cultural values and aspirations of the people who inhabit them.

One of the most prominent dichotomies in architectural theory is the tension between functionalism and aestheticism. The class covered topics on what it means to be contemporary and what then stands out as modern. Also, topics such as surfacing, ordering and authorship were part of the discussion program. It ended with the postscript topic where the topics on well-known architects such as Frank Gehry and Rafael Moneo were covered.

I consider that the class was very enriching because I was able to learn about other ways of studying and visualizing architecture. It is evident in the course that although architecture in different contexts is expressed in a different way, there are cases where very similar ideas converge that seem to be known prior to the work, but on the contrary. The theory, then, offers us a framework to think critically about how we design and inhabit our spaces, and challenges us to create environments that are functional, beautiful, sustainable and just.

The practice of architecture, to have academic merit or value does not have to be built, it could be seen how there were many works that, although they were not built, were visualized in a way to question the world in which we live and the way in which our lives are perceived. surroundings and customs. In this way, the use of multiple media is allowed to reach a key representation related to art or architecture itself.

The class opened the doors for me to reflect that architecture is not only designing to build, but designing to understand, learn and recognize that there is an intrinsic value in every detail, where each decision impacts functionality, aesthetics and quality of life. of those who interact with the space. Nowadays architecture is understood in different ways and the evolution that is going to be perceived with new possibilities that current technology and what is yet to come is incredible.
